Leaving winter

In Minnesota, I’m learning that ‘up North’ is anywhere an hour or so North from the Twin Cities. Usually there are cabins there, at least a few of the 10,000 lakes, and telephone pole type pine tree forests. Not owning a car has ups and downs, but those weekends roaming around in friends’ cars are some of my best winter memories!

Friend,

you are always expanding.

Your fingertips meet the

steering wheel

and then the rest of the world,

Rolling pavement beneath us,

Icey lanes shimmer out ahead

How frivolous for us to leave the cold

We’d chosen for ourselves

In the little plastic boxes

we’d spent our lives building.

Here we are, kids again.

I hold out for you

some chocolate pieces

in my cupped hands.
